Nintendo Switch: Joy-Con ToolKit Color Tweaking

If you are like me and found yourself with a new set of Joy-Con shells, but cringe at that the mismatching icon colors on your Nintendo Switch, then friend, I have good news for you. My wife came to me with a solution to this problem, and I could not be more satisfied. Its a fairly quick solution and more importantly, its super easy.

1: Download JC-ToolKit

In this guide, we will be working with Joy-Con Toolkit v5.2.0. Be sure to check the prerequisites to make sure you have everything needed!

——[Prerequisites]——

-Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 (x86) Redistributable (All Windows versions)

-Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.1 (for Windows lower than Windows 10)

-Bluetooth 2.0 and up (USB adapter or built-in)

-Windows 7 and up (host or VM guest)

-ZIP Utility

Open up your favorite browser and head over to the JC_ToolKit Github site (click the photo above if you want me to take you there).

At the bottom of the page under "Assets", there is a download link "Joy-Con_Toolkit_v5.2.0.zip", click to start the download.

The download should be around 236 KB in size and will be in .zip format..

2a: Browse to the directory where you saved your download

Once your download is complete, browse to its directory and extract the .zip contents.

Note: If you are using Windows 7, you will not have a native zip utility built-in. Some good free solutions are WinRAR and 7-Zip.

2b: Navigate into the extracted folder

Browse into the directory you where you extracted the .zip contents and look for the applications called jctool_v5.2.0.exe.

Don’t try to launch it yet, we will get to that part shortly.

3a: Pair your Joy-Con via Bluetooth

Open your Bluetooth menu in Windows and click "add Bluetooth or other device"

3b: Pair your Joy-Con via Bluetooth

At the add device menu, click "Bluetooth".

3c: Pair your Joy-Con via Bluetooth

On your Joy-Con, press and hold the sync button.

3d: Pair your Joy-Con via Bluetooth

You should see the Joy-Con appear as an available device in Windows, most likely named "Joy-Con (L)" or "Joy-Con (R)" depending on which Joy-Con you are connecting first. Click the Joy-Con device when it appears.

Your Joy-Con should now be paired with Windows.

4: Launch JoyCon ToolKit

launch jctool_v5.2.0.exe. You should see a window with a Joy-Con shown, with the colors of the original shells and buttons.

5a: Make a backup!

We are about to write changes directly to the Joy-Con firmware. It is extremely recommended to make a backup of your Joy-Cons before making any changes! Do so by clicking Backup SPI.

5b: Make a backup!

The backup should run for about 10 minutes and save itself in the directory where jctools_v5.2.0.exe resides, with a name "spi_right_<S/N Here>.bin" or "spi_left_<S/N Here>.bin" depending on which Joy-Con you backup.

5c: Make a backup!

Once the backup completes, find a safe place for these .bin files, if anything messes up in the process they will be your saving grace!

6a: Change some colors

Click "Change Color".

At the bottom middle (left-ish) There will be two check boxes labeled "Body" and "Buttons".

Start by selecting “Body”, then play around on the color spectrum and selector until you find a color you like. I chose to make mine match the color of my shells.

Next click the "Buttons" checkbox and repeat the process to find a color you would like to set for your buttons.

Once you are done, click "OK".

6c: Change some colors

A preview of your colors will appear. If you are satisified, click "Write Colors".

Unpair your controller from Windows and then repeat steps 3 - 6 for the other Joy-Con. Unpair when finished.

Complete!

Now when you go to pair your Joy-Cons to your Nintendo Switch, you should see your selected shell and button colors appear in the Controllers menu.
